About the DMET class of 1972.

DMET is the only academy of its kind in India that trains Marine Engineers. DMET has two branches, one in Mumbai (Bombay) and another in calcutta, latter being the head-quarters. It is funded and run by Ministry of Transport of the central government. DMET turns out 100 Marine Engineers every year. About 20,000 aspiring candidates compete every year for 60 seats in Calcutta and 40 in Bombay.

The batch of 1972, was an eclectic mix of inspired souls from all over India. I would wager that almost every state in the union was represented, but it didn't matter. Each cadet was an aspiring sea-farer and there were no barriers among us, except those based on personalities. We made some lasting friendships over the four years at the college. Some of these were based on common interests, the others the 'fox-hole' kind.

Although the cadets from the Bomabay and Calcutta were together only for the senior year, it didn't take us long to bond.

Now, a quarter century later, the alumni from the DMET are spread out all over the world. This is an attempt to locate all the batch-mates. So far we have located our friends in Australia, Hongkong, Singapore, Malayasia, Norway, UAE, and USA.

The index on the left lists all the cadets in the batch in the Roll Number order. We are attempting to publish current information about all the batchmates as it becomes available. Click on the names in the index at left to branch to the respective personal information page. The links are active only for the people who have sent in the information. If you want to send a email to a batchmate, click on the yellow envelop abreast his name.

The batchmates with a abreast their names are no longer with us.

Danville CA, July 7, 1998: SK Gupta reports..... "Latest on me is that I have accepted an offer to move to the Lockheed Martin headquarters in Bethesda, MD, a suburb of Washington DC. The position is Director, Best Practices, and my responsibilities will be to bring in and transfer Best Practices across our 64 companies to achieve steady state savings of $2.6 Billion by the year 2002. Yes, that was with a "B" - the Corporation's annual sales are in the $40+B range. This is a new position, and continues me on a track of never taking over a job from anyone, since I left the ships in 1980!"

"I will be moving around the first week of August, with Neeta and Nitin to follow by end of August. Will leave Devina behind at UC Berkeley...yes, ouch and ouch! "

Exchange.(Offers/solicitations for help, material or merchandise.)

Mumbai, India, July 9, 1998: Chandru Jagtini writes ...." I too have had the good fortune of not having to take over somebody else's mess. I have created a new niche for myself in all my ventures. Firstly, it was a Dealership for a new product range from Ion Exchange (I) Ltd. This opened avenues for me with the Oil & Natural Gas Corpn. Ltd. and I set up new representations for foreign OEMs."

I have in my basket,

  1. Aqua-Chem Inc., Milwaukee WIS, USA, for their Desalination Plants (on retainer with them for sales and service as their Indian Agent)

  2. Eiffel Construction, France, for spare part supplies to Rigs build by them operating in India.

  3. Belliss & Morcom/Hamworthy (NEI Group), U.K., for the Compressor spares, and a host of other smaller companies on a job to job 'No Cure No Pay' basis. All these are also $ B++ Companies....

"In case any of you are aware of Multinationals seeking representative/administrative set-up (not manufacturing .. not even intending to go for manufacture in India), please let me know, as I do have ample scope to expand. My forte is representation for ONGC and Shipping Projects. Could furnish genuine excellent references from all my Principals for the continued efforts we put in on their behalf. "

Personal Essays, Prose and Poetry.

  1. A Poem by annonymous: (Contributor: Anil Raj)

Read it. Chances are you feel the same way.

  2. Poonam's Observation on my good fortune: (Contributor: Rajan Bhandari)

Poonam (My wife) made me count my blessings....
    • That I have a loving family, parents, house and Batchmates. When she saw the e-mail flying around, the webpage under construction and in operation, she said that I am lucky to have such a network of friends.

Very few people can count on such blessing, even among other DMET batches.

A case in point is a batchmate with a real big heart, who offered...
"An open house to all DMET guys in Bathesda (After Jan 1999)!"

  3. An anecdote of treachery and poetic justice: (Contributor: S.K. Gupta)

A number of our batchmates were coming back together from Delhi to Calcutta. One of them was bringing back two boxes of sweets. Well, when he went to sleep, the other batchmates decided to feed their sweet tooth(teeth?)! Soon the boxes were empty. Well, in order to postpone the inevitable discovery, they filled the boxes with garbage, hoping that when he opened them at DMET, he won't know who to blame!

Were they surprised, when at a station on the way, our batchmate had some visitors. After all the niceties, our batchmates says, "Mummy has sent these mithais for you", and gives them the two boxes!!! Till now, we have not heard how those relatives reacted on opening the boxes.

p.s I was not on that train!!!
p.p.s: It is also suspected that our batchmate may still not know!

  4. Shivaji Basu's poignant account of Apu (Sushobhan) Banerjee's passing away.

Having spent a considerable amount of time trying to put my feelings about Opu into words - I finally gave up. Also, as my wife Deepa advises me - I guess it’s not important really - he’s gone anyway. Nothing is going to change that.

That awful day, we were woken up at 3 in the morning. Deepa had picked up the phone, listened in for a few seconds & then hung up. It was good 2~3 minutes before she mumbled the information. Apparently at about 2 in the morning he complained of chest pain and told Falguni to arrange to take him to a Hospital. By the time we reached the Hospital it was all over. A massive heart attack. It had to happen to Opu - a guy who didn’t smoke, rarely consumed alcohol, so very fussy about food - no oily stuff and all that and worked out regularly!. Funny. Anyway, life’s like that, I guess.

Director T.K.T. Srisailam's message for the class of 1972

I am very happy to note that the twentieth batch of cadets passing out of the D. M. E. T. are bringing out a Souvenir following established tradition. After a long passage of years, one continues to cherish memories of the training days and longs to meet old classmates. It is sometimes difficult to recognise and identify one's old acquaintances, what with beards, side locks and so on. A rapid increase in girth, after the benefits of clean fresh sea breeze and the good things on the ships, does not make the matter of recognition of old friends any better. For me what matters is to remember what you looked like during your training days and your souvenir will definitely find a prominent place in my library at home. I wish the batch good luck and may God bless you all.
